X-Men First Class : Review
June 18th 2011 12:32
Before writing this review of X-Men : First Class I must tell you that this is my first X-Men movie at a theater and my second movie of the the franchise after X-Men Origins : Wolverine. Further, I am not a very big fan of the scifi-fantasy genre (apart from Spiderman and Batman). So there is a very good chance this review of X-Men : First Class will not be as unbiased as most of my other reviews.
This is the story of the early mutants before they became X-Men or Magneto's men or for that matter before Charles Xavier became Professor X and Eric Lensherr Magneto, when the mutants were just ostracized individuals. All except for a devious ex-Nazi officer named Sebastian Shaw who had realized the potential of mutants and using his position to scout for more mutants to join his following and ambitious plans of world domination. However, unfortunately for him he made the mistake of making a sworn enemy of Eric Lensherr who has grown into a very powerful mutant.
In the meantime, and presumably after the fall of the Nazis, Shaw is using his army of mutants to cause widespread confusion and mistrust between US and Russian diplomats in an attempt to heat up the cold world and lay the foundations for his plans of world domination.
After a failed attempt to kill Shaw, Eric somewhat grudgingly decides to join hands with Charles and the two of them along with two other mutants Raven and Hank decide to help the CIA in better understanding the mutants and creating an army of mutants to combat Shaw and his followers.
But at the time of the final reckoning when the two groups of mutants are all set to go face to face they suddenly realize that they are all facing a common and more powerful enemy in the form of humans. Can they put their differences aside and unite to survive?
Though not quite in the same league as The Dark Knight, X-Men : First Class is definitely one of the better sci-fi movies to have come out of Hollywood and according to many better than all the other movies in the X-men franchise. However, being a prequel to an already established series it has the obvious disadvantage that there won't be too many twists as you already know the conclusion. Further, according to people who are well versed about X-Men comics the stories don't match but I don't think that's really much of an issue.
Finally, some critics believe that January Jones' portrayal of Emma Frost is rather poor and while no one is doubting her sex appeal they seem to think that she lacks the personality and mystique of Emma Frost (in the comic books). For my part, all I can say regarding this matter is that I was so busy amiring her looks (both in body-fitting suites and showgirl lingerie that I never quite found the time to recognize these deficiencies and imperfections!
Last but definitely not the least I have nothing but the highest praise for the scintillating on-screen chemistry between Michael Fassbender (Magneto) and James McAvoy (Charles Xavier). I sure hope we see a lot more of this talented duo.
