FILMENATOR - My Candid Take on Movies from Around the Globe

Will David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo be Better than the Original?

July 6th 2011 15:31
[This is a short sneak preview of the Hollywood Version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, conjecturing its possible highs and lows over the original Swedish movie]

David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, scheduled to release later this year is already creating quite a lot of noise and is undoubtedly one of the most eagerly anticipated movies in a year which has already had more than its fair share of big banner movies (Pirates of the Caribbean 4, X-Men First Class and Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

The movie is based on its internationally bestselling namesake novel by Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. the Millenium Trilogy (of which The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the first part) enjoys a cult following like few others in modern crime literature. And David Fincher and the Crew are cashing in on it big time with some great market strategies and sexy James Bond style posters.

But this is not the first effort to capture on film the sexually charged man-hunt based thriller on film. The Swedish original was released back in 2009 and starred Michael Nyqvist and Noomy Rapace.

As, is imminent there is bound to be a lot of comparison between the original Swedish as well as the new Hollywood version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. So here is my prediction on what we can expect from this Davis Fincher movie in the light of the original.

Personally, I am pretty sure that the Hollywood remake will be much much better than the Swedish one and the main reason behind this belief is of course the budget factor. And we all know the power of money!

Further, it is quite reasonable to assume that Daniel Craig will be a force to
noomi rapace, the girl with the dragon tattoo
reckon with in this movie and will definitely not play a submissive second fiddle to Rooney Mara. Not only will this be a better representation of the actual plot than the Michael Nyqvist's bumbling and stupid Blomokvist but it is most likely to have a significant positive effect on the whole narrative of the story with two points of focus rather than just one.

Also, I hope that the ending of the movie will pack more of a punch than the original which kind of faded away some 30 odd minutes before the credits finally began to roll.

However, I have to admit that I honestly do not think that anyone (and I mean anyone) can put in a better performance than Noomi Rapace as the enigmatic and fascinating Lisbeth Salander. I am not saying the Rooney Mara is a bad actor or will not fit the role, all I am saying is while the rest of the crew will have a pretty easy time of beating (more like thrashing) the original she will definitely have her work cut out.

I've not yet read the novel, but I was very impressed with the movie. I'm also a huge fan of Fincher's work, so I'm expecting the Hollywood remake to be of a very high calibre. I'm curious to see whether I prefer Fincher's version.

I am big fan of your blog and watched the original movie only after reading your review. However, the movie did not quite live upto my expectations and Michael Nyqvist bumbling Blomkvist just wasn't good enough. But, I might be bit biased in my review because I had read the book before watching the movie and that is not always the best idea, specially in the crime thriller genre.

Did you change the poster image? I'm sure you could see Mara's nipple when I made my first comment.

Wow! U r really observant!
Yes I did. I actually rechecked Adsense TOS and found that absolutely NO nudity is allowed by Adesense under any pretext whatsoever. So, why take a chance, right?
I have also deleted a sex scene screen shot in my review of Pan Nalin's Samsara.
Hope you don't mind?

Btw, I seem to recall that ur Caligula post had quite a bit of breast nudity. Ne issues with that?

Ha ha ha!
We live in very conservative times.
I breached the Google Adsense policy a while back (I'd been including nudity in pics sporadically for several years, until some idiot autobot decided to make an example of me), so I don't have any advertising on my site anymore.
It's bollocks!
Now I'm free to exhibit as many nude tits as I like!
Woo hoo!
