April 23rd 2011 09:02
Mortimer and Randolph Duke are two successful traders in the processed food industry who are always game for a wager and eager to conduct experiments into human character in the hope of winning the Nobel Prize.
They decide find out the effects of circumstances on one's character and arrange for one of their top employees Winthorpe to be branded as a common thief and take away all his money, assets, luxuries and f\his fiancée. They then grant Winthorpe's job along with all its perks to destitute, Billy Valentine. As expected, both men have trouble grasping the unexpected change in their situations but while for Valentine has a relatively easy time Winthorpe, who at this point is living as prostitute's house guest is finding it difficult to come to terms with the situation and is contemplating theft, murder and suicide.
Movie Making of Trading Places
Trading Places is a pretty good "feel good" movie with a mildly interesting (but not at all intrepid) story at its heart. The less than two hour timeline makes it a light, enjoyable watch and parts of the movie specially near the beginning are seriously hilarious (but no crass humor). However, the story falls apart a bit in the last half an hour when Winthorpe and Billy Valentine are looking to exact revenge on the Dukes and get rich in the process. Watch this movie if you have time to kill and not feeling in the pink of spirits. It undoubtedly has a PG Wodehouse effect that can potentially bring the spring back in your step.
