The Others Starring Nicole Kidman : Movie Review
January 18th 2011 17:42
The Others, starring Nicole Kidman, is the story of a single mother Grace (Nicole Kidman) waiting hopelessly for her husband's return from the war in an isolated mansion of an equally isolated island. But it soon becomes clear that there is more to the mansion than meets the eye--starting from the sudden appearance of team of house-helps (who claims to be previously employed to that very same mansion) to the existence of a "spoiled brat" called Victor who is visible only to Grace's little daughter who accuses him of doing all sorts of naughty things like stealing the curtains and distracting her during studies.
As the impossible merges with the possible Grace finds herself in the middle of a terrifying fight to protect her children and her sanity and the odds are stacked against her.
Movie Making of The Others
The movie making of The Others is quite sensational and totally suites the theme of the movie and accentuates its goosebumps-factor. I particularly enjoyed the manipulation in the script whereby the children are declared to be suffering from a pigmentation problem which makes them almost fatally vulnerable to any light stronger than the glow of a lamp or candle. This gives the director a great excuse to shoot night (low light) shots through out the entire length of the movie and thus increase the chilling effect. Further, I personally feel that warm lighting (fire source) in a medieval castle also makes for some haunting visuals.
My Verdict on The Others
The Others is very thrilling horror movie which is capable of keeping just about any audience riveted to the edge of their seats. However, if you like the macabre (and high violence) variety of horror movies (like Omen) then you might just give The Others the miss.
Enjoyed The Others Starring Nicole Kidman ?
If you enjoyed The Others then you might want to try The Sixth Sense starring Bruce Willis and Black Swan starring Natalie Portman (albeit this is NOT a horror movie).
