The Dirty Picture featuring an all-star cast of Vidya Balan, Nasseeruddin Shah, Emran Hasmi and Tushar Kapoor had been making a lot of noise even months before its release and was perhaps the most talked about film since Shah Rukh Khan's Ra-One released in late October and here's a low down on this movie based on the sex starved South Indian film industry of the miserable 80s.

Story of The Dirty Picture
The Dirty Picture takes a no holds barred look at the astronomical rise to fame of the late South Indian item girl popularly as Silk Smitha. A small town girl Reshma is determined to make it big in the male dominated South Indian film industry and she is willing to go to just about any length from going skin bare to whipping herself to convince the directors that she has something special. And soon she catches the eye of a major producer caller Ganesh Selva who shrewdly realizes that though Reshma has neither any acting or dancing skills, she can really turn on the heat that his audience so crave and gladly do stuff others wouldn't dream of doing. After managing to seduce the biggest star in the industry, Suryakant (Nasseeruddin Shah), Silk manages to wriggle her way to the top and become an indispensable ingredient of every masala film and gossip magazine.

Though Silk's lifestyle and unabashed sexuality attracts criticism from just about critic and womens' group, she has an strong legion of fans and is only too happy to be that part of their dreams which none of them would admit to having during the day but cannot help having at night.

Adding an interesting subplot is the character of art film director Abraham who is determined to single handedly transform the crappy and degenerating industry and as far as he is concerned Silk is the personification of everything he hates about the industry.

Review of The Dirty Picture

To me, The Dirty Picture looked like nothing more than a fluffy masala movie which is supposedly made to present the exploitation of young women in the Indian film circuit but its greatest marketing strategy is keeping the camera firmly fixed on Vidya Balan's not unimpressive cleavage. But, apart from that and the fact that I absolutely hated the theme music the movie does feature excellent performances from Vidya Balan and Nasseeruddin Shah and Emran Hasmi is also decent.

The movie also features some explosive sexually inclined dialog and innuendos but some of the one liners are a touch repetitive and some fell completely flat. Overall it is a bold movie and a sexy movie but nothing to get overly excited about.
