FILMENATOR - My Candid Take on Movies from Around the Globe

Terminator Vs. Transformers : One Must Die for the Other to Live

July 7th 2011 10:53

Ok, I admit it. The title to this post is meant to be a bit catchy and hopefully attract a few visitors. But does the concept of the survival of only one of the Terminator and Transformers franchise really sound so unbelievable? You bet it does! Right? I mean Transformers and Terminator are perhaps the two largest (at least financially) sci-fi franchises ever. And then there's the fan base. Surely they can coexist? May be so...but then again, may be not!

If you take a slightly closer look at the Terminator and Transformers movies you will realize that both of them are essentially telling almost superimposable stories but just dressed up differently.

To begin with, both of them have repeatedly converted planet Earth into an
Armageddon where one specie must fight for its survival against another more powerful specie. Further, the central character in each of the series are merely innocent by-lookers who are drawn into the thick of things by some rather abstruse and convoluted logic or sequence of events. And, I am not even considering the futuristic staff and the time travel concepts which are also very similar to both the franchises when analyzed minutely enough.

However, even up to this much is acceptable, sighting that they are both sci-fi movies made around the same time and most likely targeting the same audience. But what really forces the eyebrows to shoot up in a rather suspicious manner is the fact that how, over time, these two franchises have started to (knowingly or unknowingly) have started mimicking each other (from just one or two Autobots or Terminators in the first few films both the llatest releases feature entire armies of Autobots and Terminators; moreover, though the good guys always manage to save the day, the films always end on a hopeful bleaker tone than with which it started) and there by has given rise to the distinct possibility that they may converge at a point so that only one can actually survive while other fade away to oblivion.

I know a lot of you will not agree with this analysis and dismiss it as the confused psychobabble of a guy with nothing better to do and may be you are right. But maybe, just maybe, you are wrong...

Man, where to start...

Star Wars and Star Trek are both significantly larger than these two.

To begin with, both of them have repeatedly converted planet Earth into an Armageddon where one specie [sic] must fight for its survival against another more powerful specie [sic]

Pretty sure Terminator has only done that once. The first 3 movies only contained 2 Terminators (with the first only containing 1). And this is hardly a theme limited to this franchise; off the top of my head I can name 5 movies where this has happened (Battlefield Earth, Stakeland, Mars Attacks, Battle LA, Independence Day), and that's without even trying.

moreover, though the good guys always manage to save the day
As happens in 99% of blockbusters.

Yes. But the main point is that they are CONVERGING towards similar conclusion. And look way too much alike in recent years.

Can you actually give me some figures to show that Star Trek is richer than Transformers franchise? IMDB kind of suggests otherwise. But may be I am misinterpreting the data

I think your last quote is possibly incomplete.
What I mentioned is still pretty common but still not quite as common as that (eg. Spiderman and Batman movies)

You are right that just about all sci-fi movies turn earth into an Armageddon but it is still a similarity between the two.

And lastly, like I said, this is just a conjecture. And I respect your decision to reject it. No hard feelings. Cheers.

Check out this site

You can scroll down to the chart. In summary, sci-fi franchises that are bigger than Terminators and Transformers: Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Star Trek, X Men & The Matrix. That's just by box office revenue, which doesn't count the countless spinoffs, merchandising, books, etc. that are based on Star Wars and Star Trek, in particular.

Ok. I stand corrected. I am totally uninterested in space movies (seen no star trek or star wars movie) and so was skeptical. Thanks for the input.
But reading through the comments on that page one in particular caught my attention
I think its notable how comparatively poorly Star Trek has sold - it has the second most films but is pretty solidly back in the pack. Compared to the other space sci-fi franchise, Star Wars, it has double the number of films but a third the earnings.
cheers and have a great day.
