Spartacus : Gods of the Arena (2011)

Spartacus : Gods of the Arena (2011) is a short TV series apparently later adapted in the form of a full length movie which I saw on HBO and is quite possibly a prequel to another TV series, Spartacus : Blood and Sand (2010).. Here's the lowdown on this yet another Spartacus spin off.
Story of Spartacus : Gods of the Arena
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena has very little (if anything) to do with Spartacus other than to offer a vivid portrayal of contemporary Rome with special emphasis on the gladiators who sacrificed themselves for the glory of their masters and to gain immortality, to become the Gods of the Arena!
It is basically the story of Gannicus, the Champion of the House of Batiatus who is willing to sacrifice every breath of life he has to be the last man standing after the rapacious "beast", the Arena and the audience have temporarily slaked their blood thirst, in order to gain his freedom and finally live his life for himself.
Review of Spartacus : Gods of the Arena
At the time I watched this "movie" I didn't have the slightest inkling that it was in fact a TV series and so the whole story appeared very thin and inconsequential. However, it is easy to see how it can be a really impressive serial. However, the one flaw it will always have is that there is no Spartacus (or indeed any mention of him) in the movie.
Apart from that the sets are really first class as is the acting. But what sets this serial apart is the mind boggling visuals and the extremely graphic yet not repulsive gladiator combat scenes (which is the mainstay of the movie).
In all fairness, I think Spartacus : Gods of the Arena is a visual spectacle. Nothing more, nothing less.
