Snatch (2000) Starring Brad Pitt : Movie Review

Snatch (2000) is a quirky comic thriller starring Brad Pitt and Jason Statham from Guy Ritchie which takes a sneak into the world of unlicensed big money boxing and more importantly match fixing inherent in the sport.
When Turkish, one of the small fries in the business, decides to make use of a champion boxer Gorgeous George in order to negotiate the purchase of a caravan from a group of Irish gypsies little does he know that the person he intends to buy the caravan from is a champion bare knuckle fighter, Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), who knocks out Gorgeous George thus rendering him unfit for an upcoming high stakes bout. And that spells trouble for Turkish, especially because his boss Brick Top who is (in)famous for feeding people who upset his plans to his pigs!
As a last moment replacement Turkish persuades Mickey to take George's place. But that's not all, he is also instructed to go down in the fourth round. Easier said than done when you are dealing with a man with Mickey's self restraint and considering the fact that one juicy punch from him is enough to knock just about anyone out. But somehow Turkish must ensure this because otherwise he will have a tough time eluding Brick Top and staying alive.
While all this turmoil is going on in Turkish's life another group of motley characters including Boris the Blade, Avi, Bullet Tooth Tony and a gang of three African Americans are desperately trying to lay claim to a priceless 84 carat diamond and are prepared to go to any lengths to do so.
All in all Snatch is a quite an enjoyable and pleasantly light hearted comic thriller which can be enjoyed alone or with friends. But for me, that is where its positives end. The story is average to say the least and some of the scenes are absolutely bizarre (and in a negative sort of way). The music and the acting are generally good but nothing sensational and much can be said for the screenplay or treatment of the film either It is absolutely no different from just about any other leave-your-brains-at-home commercial pop cinema that are churned out a dozen to the hour in just about every major film industry around the globe, and I cannot for the life of me justify its 8.3 rating on IMDB
