FILMENATOR - My Candid Take on Movies from Around the Globe

Richie Rich : Macaulay Culkin's Swan Song

September 28th 2011 16:54
Richie Rich is an adaptation of the famous cartoon of the same name featuring the world's richest boy, Richie as he thwarts all sorts of criminals with the assistance of his goofy dog Dollar and loyal butler Cadbury-- and of course Professor Keenbean's latest and finest inventions.

Story of Richie Rich

When Mr. Rich and his wife goes missing after an accident Rich Industries' Top Executive Officer Lawrence Van Dough seizes the opportunity to pillage the famous Rich treasury. But exactly where have the Riches hidden the vast riches? Van Dough is determined to find out and Richie with the help of his ever faithful allies Cadbury, Professor Keenbean and some new friends must try and stop Van Dough and his dangerous hoods from destroying the company while hoping that Mr. and Mrs. Rich have somehow survived the accident and return post haste to bring things under control.

Review of Richie Rich

On the face of it Donald Petrie's Richie Rich has got the entire works of a feel

good movie: a pretty solid plot for a young teen's movie, tight dialog, decent suspense, a resourceful villain who is very easy to dislike and feel unsympathetic about and plenty of site gags specially from the ever dignified Cadbury and my favorite character in the film, the chubby and hilarious Professor Keaenbean (Michael McShane). But still the movie lacked that punch that would have really made a good movie, in the same league as Macaulay Culkin's previous blockbusters, Home Alone and Home Alone2. And for a time I couldn't figure out what was a miss before it hit me that the flaw is at the very heart of the movie, Macaulay Culkin is no longer as cute as used to be and now that you really notice it, he isn't much of an actor!

In fact, a little research told me that Richie Rich was indeed the Swan Song of Macaulay Culkin's career as a big child star as he would go on to deliver a series of flops in the mid 1990s before disappearing for good.
