Iti Mrinalini : Unfinished Letters
August 6th 2011 16:17
Iti Mrinalini is a Bengali movie by actor-director Aparna Sen and stars herself along with Konkona Sen Sharma and Koushik Sen.
Story of Iti Mrinalini
Iti Mrinalini tells the story of a highly successful but aging actress who has endured many hardships in her private life and is now gradually being pushed out of the Industry by younger faces. In despondency she decides to commit suicide and sits down to write a suicide not claiming that she was ending her life on her own free will and not under the influence of any action or individual.
But every time she tries to pen the letter memories come flooding in. Memories of youthful love, violence, adultery and deceit and compassion and kindness. Iti Mrinalini is the story of one woman's journey of self discovery on the eve of her self-determined death, it is the tale of one woman's insatiable thirst for life and a life marred by wrong decisions and misfortunes. But above all, Iti Mrinalini is a compassionate and non-judgmental take on life, its hardships and the little joys that make it worth bearing the pain.
Review of Iti Mrinalini
Aparna Sen's Iti Mrinalini truly deserves every bit of the attention it is receiving both in Bengal and beyond. It is truly a classic thanks almost entirely to Aparna Sen's tough, artistic and mature directing. She just has to be one of my favorite female directors around today.
The acting is also top notch with Aparna Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Koushik Sen, Rajat Kapoor and Saheb Bhattacharjee all giving impecable performances. Like many contemporary Bengali art films, Iti Mrinalini has also adapted the flashback approach with the story jumping from one point on the timeline to another. But excellent editing and screenplay has ensured the fluidity of the movie so that the viewer is not left with a bunch of confused images and ideas but can easily get the feel of the movie.
Don't let language be a barrier because this movie DESERVES to be seen, especially if you enjoy art films.

I am overwhelmed by the days that keep me sleepless at night
