Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 : Enjoy the Magic One Final Time
July 16th 2011 17:10
Incredible as it is, there is little debate that arguably the most successful
movie franchise since Star Wars has finally come to an end with the premiere of David Yate's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2! So here is a review of this final, eighth movie, featuring JK Rowling's teenage wizard Harry Potter. But, you will have to forgive me if it appears biased or I get a bit melodramatic or emotional at times for Harry Potter (both books and movies) has been a kind of a constant for me over the formitive years of my childhood and adolescence and just the thought of another Harry Potter book or movie just around the bend has always unfailingly succeeded in kindling in me a sense of expectancy the likes of which I shall sorely miss from now on.
Story of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
The movie starts exactly from where Part 1 ended (and there is no recap). Snape is now the new headmaster of Hogwarts and the castle has come under the control of Lord Voldemort even as a small group of students including Harry Potter regulars like Seamus, Luna, Parvati and Cho Chen are looking to organize a resistence along with some of the teachers like Professor McGonagal and Professor Flitwick. In the meantime, Harry, Ron and Hermione have resolved their personal ngst and are seeking out Horcruxes and destroying them in order to make Voldemort weaker. First, they must break into Bellatrix Lestrange's top secret vault at Grigotts and then they must return to Hogwarts where the 5th Horcrux is located in the most enigmatic room of the entire Castle before finally turning their attention to the final and most closely gaurded of all Voldemort's Horcruxes, Voldemort's constant companion, his snake Nagini!
In the meantime, the Battle of Hogwarts has begun with Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters trying their utmost to penetrate the magical protection of Hogwarts and massacre her defenders in the hope of finding and killing Harry Potter. But, the Dark Lord himself is troubled--why is the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in the wisendom, not obeying his command? Another thing he doesn't know is that he had unintentionally created a 7th Horcrux, Harry himself, and Harry's demise will also bring him closer to his own death!
Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
I have to that I was never fully in support of the decision to break-up the 7th and final book of the Harry Potter series into 2 parts scheduled to be released an entire year apart. And the result is for all to see. The first part was dull and boring with reels and reels of Harry and friends hiding in the woods and often unnessecarily quarelling with each other with very little suspense and only short bursts of action to break the tedium of watching teenagers squabble over inconsequential issues. So, going into this movie I was just a touch apprehensive-- has David Yates lost the touch that created such dark masterpieces out of The Order of the Phoenix and The Half Blood Prince? But a couple minutes in and I realized with huge relief that the answer was nope, nien, nahi!

From start to finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is all business. A dark, twisted thrill-a-minute ride calculated to take the viewer on one last sweeping journey through the awe inspiring world beyond the reach of muggles. As expected, the special effects are top-notch and further accentuated by the 3-D filming, the narrative and editing is as taught as a tightrope. Always supenseful, edge of the seat stuff that has made the Harry Potter movies such a riotous success over the past decade! Take my advice, watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 3-D today, relive the magic one final time. Savour the rush of bittersweet emotions as the Dark Lord is finally slain!
However, in order to be as fair a reviewer as possible, I must make you aware that this movie does suffer from two major defects: firstly, as there is no recap of Part 1, at times you will have to really strain your memory to grasp the events fully. Secondly, for such a splendid series the ending is a bit of an anticlimax, but to be fair, to script the final chaprter of such an extraordinary franchise is probably one of the toughest jobs in cinema and you will have to give the crew full marks for trying.
P.S. Watch out for my Harry Potter Legends post where I will commemorate all the great actors, actresses and directors who risen from obscurity to super stardom through the Harry Potter movies and over the decade has been an integral part of the franchise's unparalleled success.
