Collateral starring Tom Cruise

Here as a review of Michael Mann's Collateral (2006), considered by many to be Tom Cruise's best movie to date:
Story of Collateral
When Max, just another L.A. night-shift cabbie decides to take a routine fair little does he know that the smartly dressed, soft speaking man in his back seat who calls himself Vincent is a top-notch private assassin hired by a cartel to get rid of 5 key witnesses during his overnight stay in L.A. And to make matter even more sticky, Vincent has apparently taken an instant liking to Max and his excellent first hand knowledge of the city roads gleaned through 12 long years part timing as a cab so that one day he can own his very own Limo company.
Max is left with no choice but to run the gauntlet with a gun at his head and Vincent's almost non-stop reassurances and encouragements in his year.Putting a body in his boot, impersonation, being witness to cold blooded murders and finally assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.
But as the body count starts to rise the police start to make the connection between the seemingly random killings and a net is spread to catch Max who has been cleverly set up by Vincent as his decoy.
4 of Vincent's targets and numerous police officers are down as Vincent homes in for his fifth and final kill of the night required to fulfill his contract but little does he realize that his time with Max that night has completely transformed the nerdish cabbie and now, not only is he the only person who can foil Vincent, but is hellbent to do so.
Review of Collateral
Collateral is very good thriller and though not quite in the same league as The Departed or Michael Mann's own earlier effort Heat, it is very gripping and has strong dialog and a slightly bizarre but totally believable plot. But what makes this movie special is the great chemistry between the sleek and sophisticated looking Tom Cruise (Vincent) and Jamie Foxx (Max). In fact, Jamie Foxx got an Oscar nomination for his great performance and Tom Cruise sure wasn't far behind. By the way, I think Tom Cruise looks really good in this movie where he has forgone at least partly his clean shaven boyish good looks.
Though the movie does serve up a nice twist at the very end it could have done with a few more of them and also a few more cliff hanger moments, that is to say, the movie is thrilling but uniformly so with hardly any crescendo or climax followed by that so satisfying exhale when things have momentaroly calmed down which is always the hallmark of a really great thriller.
Overall, Collateral is definitely nearer the top of my all time favorite thrillers but it is not the best, and it is also not my best Tom Cruise movie either.
