FILMENATOR - My Candid Take on Movies from Around the Globe

Cape Fear : A Martin Scorsese Thriller

December 15th 2011 05:07
Over the years I have become a really big fan of Marin Scorsese thrillers and just couldn't wait to dig into his 1991 remake of Cape Fear starring Robert De Niro amongst others. And as always he does not disappoint.

Story of Cape Fear
Basically Cape Fear is a haunting revenge driven thriller. When rapist Max Cady

(Robert De Niro) leaves prison a free man after 14 years he has only one objective in life--ruining the apparently happy life of his defense attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) who took the law into his own hands and intentionally buried evidence that could have got Cady acquitted and saved him 14 yrs of suffering and 'loss'.

But Sam Bowden's family is not as perfect as it seems and he isn't the

perfect gentleman he portrays himself to be. And to make matters worse his daughter Danielle is about the same age as the girl Cady had raped. And these are all opportunities that Cady can exploit to terrorize Bowden and totally ruin is professional life and even his family.

In a desperate state of fear, Bowden resorts to a number of illegal and dastardly scheme to hospitalize or even kill Cady but when all these fail he is left with no other choice but to take his family on a boat down the river towards Cape Fear. But Cady is not only tough and street smart but he also has the luck of the devil. The stage is truly set for a nerve wracking Martin Scorsese finale...

Review of Cape Fear
Cape Fear is one of the finest revenge driven thrillers you will ever see (and not just because of the violence). But it goes way beyond the one guy bashes up other guy routine and repeatedly asks (and answers) the question that few want to ask--Can a situation turn a 'good' man into bad one. Max Cady is

heinous criminal and there is no denying the crime he committed but still you will find yourself sympathizing with his and starting to repel the fast talking Sam Bowden who appears to be a personification of respectability.

Though Martin Scorsese is a terrific film maker, I doubt if he could have made it happen without the genius that is Rober De Niro who portrays the character of the mean, vengeful and yet self righteous and Bible quoting ex-con to perfection and literally carries the entire film on his shoulder with his towering screen presence. In fact, in my humble opinion he was rather unfortunate to have not won the 1992 Oscar which eventually went to Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs). Haunting back ground scores and some excellent camera work make this a delightful watch for people who relish nightmarish movies.
