Batman Begins : Movie Review
July 28th 2011 16:50
My brush with the Batman franchise was ( believe it or not) with The Dark Knight and it is perhaps the only movie (apart from American Pie 6: Beta House) which I have watched more that 5 times in the last couple of years! Finally, satiated with the tremendous (and last) Heath Ledger performance I decided it was time to move on ( or rather move backwards) and next in line was Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.
Story of Batman Begins
After his parents get assassinated for helping the poor through a economic depression, billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne travels halfway across the world to Asia to understand the forces of evil and how to destroy them from a veteran warrior Ra's Al Ghul. But their mentor-favorite pupil relationship gets smashed when Wayne realizes that the next target of Ra's Al Ghul will be Gotham city which has become irreversibly corrupt nad must now to totally annihilated to weed out the evil. However, Wayne manages to foil this plan and barely escape to Gotham with his life.
But back in Gotham, Wayne realizes the truth of Ghul's worlds as he recognizes that his beloved city is now run by a drug lord called Falcone and a mysterious psychologist, Dr. Crane. The only way to save Gotham is to create a legacy who is not a man but has superhuman powers and will instill fear in the hearts of both the gangsters and the city's corrupt law enforcers. And that iconic Samaritan of Gotham is the Batman.
Armed with futuristic (and still-in-development) products created in the secret research unit of Wayne Enterprise by Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) and a steely determination to protect the innocents of Gotham Batman is born.
But soon the Batman realizes that Falcone is just a front and the devious Dr. Crane just a pawn in a diabolical plan that will rip Gotham apart with the help of a special toxin invented by Dr. Crane that causes hallucination and paranoia.
Review of Batman Begins
The first thing that struck me about the entire Batman franchise is that basically it is as much a sci-fi/fantasy movie as James Bond! Each and everyone of Batman's "special powers" is accounted for as is his strength and agility. And give credit to Nolan for sticking to that theme through out the entire movie.
Batman's brand of (implicit) action with rapidly changing camera angles isn't my favorite but that is more than compensated the intriguing character of Dr. Crane. And Morgan Freeman, who just has to be my favorite supporting actor of all time, fits into the role of Lucius Fox perfectly.
The story though not entirely original (it borrows heavily from a Sherlock Holmes short story) is fresh enough and and is highly enjoyable especially as it is told in the fast gripping and convincing narrative style that has become the hallmark of Christopher Nolan.
